Father, teen son arrested during break-in

A Toronto man and his teenaged son were among three people arrested Friday evening during a break-in at a Guelph business.

At 7:30 p.m. police received a call from a witness who advised he had caught three males stealing metal products from a business near Dawson Road and Woodlawn Road West and had blocked in their vehicle with his transport truck.

Officers arrived a short time later and found the three still on scene.

A 40-year-old Toronto man, his 15-year-old son and a 25-year-old Etobicoke man are all charged with break and enter. All were released with February court dates.

$20,000 in cigarettes stolen
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after thousands of dollars in cigarettes were stolen from a Guelph business early Sunday.

Just after 1 a.m., the manager of a business near Eramosa Road and Metcalfe Street called to report a break and enter in progress. Officers arrived three minutes later but the suspects had just left.

Security video revealed three men arrived in a white car and parked in front of the business. One of the males smashed the glass door and all three entered. They stole cigarettes valued at $18,000 to $20,000 and a small amount of cash.

All three males were dressed in dark clothing with ski masks and gloves. Two are believed to have brown skin and the third had white or lighter brown skin.

While en route to the business, officers passed a white car later determined to be stolen from Peel Region, but it is not known if it was involved in this incident.

Vehicle stolen and then crashed
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a vehicle was stolen from the owner’s driveway and then crashed.

Just before 10 a.m. Friday police were called to an address on Woolwich Street near Division Street. The owner said she had placed her car keys on a table near the front door the previous evening, and when she woke the keys and her car were missing.

A neighbour provided security video which showed a male approaching the victim’s house and then a short time later the vehicle being reversed from the driveway. During the investigation it was learned the car had been involved in a collision just outside the city.

Officers spoke to a witness, who reported she offered the male driver a lift back into Guelph and dropped him near Eramosa Road and Victoria Road North. The male was described as white, approximately 50 years of age, 5’6,” thin build with dark curly hair and a grey moustache. He also had a heavy accent and walked with a slouch. He was wearing a grey coat, black toque and glasses.

Two impaired arrests
Two Guelph men face impaired driving charges following separate incidents on the weekend, including one which partially closed a south-end street.

Approximately 7:20 p.m. Saturday, emergency services were called for a report of a man passed out in a vehicle at a business near Edinburgh Road South and Kortright Road West. Officers located a male unconscious in the driver’s seat of a running vehicle with the transmission in the Drive position. Firefighters broke the car’s window to gain access to him.

Officers noted tinfoil with brown residue on the passenger seat and burned ashes on the man’s clothing. He was transported to hospital and later performed poorly on a drug recognition evaluation.

Investigation revealed he is a prohibited driver as a result of a previous impaired driving conviction. A 34-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and driving while prohibited.

Approximately 7:40 a.m. Sunday, police were called for a collision at the intersection of Laird Road and Southgate Drive. A vehicle had struck a light standard, knocking it down and partially blocking the road. Officers spoke to the driver and noted a strong odour of alcohol on his breath.

He was placed under arrest and tests at the police station revealed he had more than twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 24-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, driving while suspended and novice driver having alcohol in their system.

Both drivers had their licences suspended and their vehicles seized and were released with upcoming court dates.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
