Vehicle stop leads to break-in charges
A Guelph man faces several charges after he was caught driving a car stolen from a break and enter.

Approximately 11:20 p.m. Saturday an officer patrolling on Waverley Drive noticed an Audi A5 without any licence plates. The driver provided the vehicle’s ownership and verbally identified himself with the same name as on the ownership. Investigation determined he was not the owner.

Officers were able to contact the vehicle owner by telephone and he reported he had dropped his car off at a garage for servicing and nobody should be driving it. The owners of the garage were contacted and confirmed someone had broken into their office and stole a laptop and several vehicle keys. These items were observed inside the Audi.

A 36-year-old Guelph man was arrested for break and enter, possessing stolen property over $5,000 and breach of probation. He was held for a bail hearing Monday.

Trafficking arrest downtown
A Guelph man faces fentanyl trafficking charges after officers observed him acting suspiciously downtown Saturday morning.

Approximately 10:15 a.m. police saw two men outside a business and noted one crouched over a scale possibly cutting something. As officers approached the male picked up his belongings and quickly walked away. He attempted to flee but was stopped and arrested.

A search revealed quantities of suspected pink and blue fentanyl as well as empty baggies, the scale with drug residue and cash.

A 47-year-old Guelph man was arrested for possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. After further investigation which included reviewing footage from surveillance cameras he was also charged with trafficking a controlled substance. He was held for a bail hearing Tuesday.

Indecent act suspect arrested again
A man arrested a week ago for exposing himself and attempting to urinate on strangers was arrested again on the weekend.

Shortly after 10 p.m. May 16, police received several calls about a man approaching people downtown, trying to urinate on them and trying to grab women while touching himself. None of them were physically injured.

Police located the 26-year-old Guelph male in the area and arrested him for committing an indecent act and mischief. He was later released on an undertaking including a condition he not be downtown between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Approximately 12:15 a.m. Saturday a witness familiar with the man called to report he was sitting on a planter at Wyndham Street North and Macdonell Street. Officers arrived and arrested him for failing to comply with an undertaking. He was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court June 27.

Truck stolen and later recovered
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a transport truck was stolen from Guelph and later recovered in Mississauga.

Friday morning, a Guelph man reported his 2022 Volvo Aro had been stolen from a parking lot on Southgate Drive. It was tracked via GPS to an address in Mississauga, where it was located Sunday afternoon.

Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Todd Van Iersel at 519-824-1212, ext. 7557, email tvaniersel@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

The Guelph Police Service encourages residents to take steps to protect themselves from auto theft. This can include parking indoors when possible or in well-lit areas, ensuring vehicle doors and windows are closed and locked, employing anti-theft devices to prevent vehicles from being started or steered and using devices to block signals from electronic keys. Please report suspicious activity around unattended vehicles, especially during overnight hours.

Two daytime impaired arrests
Three motorists were arrested for impaired driving in Guelph over the weekend, including two in the middle of the day.

Just after 3 p.m. Friday a vehicle was stopped near Massey Road and Elmira Road North. While speaking to the driver the officer noted a strong odour of alcohol on his breath. After failing a roadside breath test he was transported to the police station where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 38-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.

Just before 2 a.m. Saturday, police received a report of a pickup being driven erratically downtown. A short time later officers located the truck unattended in a driveway on Gordon Street. A man walking in the area matched witness descriptions and he confirmed he was the owner of the vehicle.

Officers noted a strong odour of alcohol on his breath and the man appeared to be impaired. After failing a roadside breath test he was transported to the police station where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 34-year-old Hamilton man is charged with impaired driving.

Approximately 10 a.m. Saturday police received complaints of a vehicle being drive erratically on Speedvale Avenue. Officers checked the area and the owner’s address but did not locate the vehicle. Shortly after 1:30 p.m. Saturday police received a call about the same vehicle parked and running in a driveway on Imperial Road with the driver apparently asleep behind the wheel.

Officers spoke to the driver and noted alcohol on his breath and signs of impairment. He failed a roadside breath test and was transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 26-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.

All three drivers had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. They were released with upcoming court dates.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.

COBOURG (April 23, 2026) – Cobourg Police Service is reminding the public to be aware of fraud involving gift cards and impersonation on social media platforms, following a recent incident in which a resident was targeted through an online group. In the most recent scam, a 71-year-old woman reported being contacted on social media by an individual claiming to be associated with a television show after she commented on a fan page for the program. The scammer offered a “VIP membership” in exchange for payment through gift card codes. The victim was defrauded out of $1,200. The victim was later contacted again and advised she could attend the TV set if she deposited the cheque, they sent into her bank account and forwarded the funds. When she attended her financial institution, bank staff recognized the signs of a scam and intervened. The victim had no verifiable contact information for the individual, and all communication occurred exclusively through social media. Cobourg Police Service is reminding residents that legitimate organizations and businesses will never request payment in gift cards, nor will they ask individuals to deposit cheques on their behalf. Be cautious of unsolicited messages on social media, even if they appear to come from well-known individuals, celebrities, or organizations Scammers commonly use gift cards or cryptocurrency because they are difficult to trace and cannot be recovered Never send money, gift card codes, or cryptocurrency to someone you have only interacted with online Do not deposit cheques or forward funds at the request of someone else If an offer sounds too good to be true, it likely is Talk to a trusted family member, friend, or financial institution before sending money Fraudsters rely on pressure and secrecy. Police encourage residents to slow down, ask questions, and report suspicious activity. Anyone who believes they may be the target of a scam, or who has received suspicious online communications, is encouraged to contact Cobourg Police Service or report the incident to the Canadian Anti‑Fraud Centre at 1‑888‑495‑8501 or online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
